Privacy Policy
The short version
- Dance studios use SkillBarre to track and share each dancer's progress with their family.
- Dancers do not have their own accounts. A parent or guardian holds the account.
- We collect a dancer's name and dance progress from their studio, and the avatar and reward choices made in the family app. The app does not collect a dancer's date of birth, contact details, photos or location.
- We do not sell personal information, show ads, or use tracking or analytics tools.
- Parents can review or delete their child's information at any time by emailing privacy@skillbarre.com.
1. Who we are
SkillBarre, LLC ("SkillBarre," "we," "us") is a Texas limited liability company. We provide software that dance studios use to manage their curriculum, record each dancer's skill progress, and share that progress with families. This policy covers our website at skillbarre.com, the SkillBarre studio web app, and the SkillBarre mobile app for instructors and families.
2. How SkillBarre works
A studio signs up for SkillBarre and adds its classes, instructors and dancers. Instructors record each dancer's progress on the studio's curriculum as star ratings, notes and attendance. The studio invites each dancer's parent or guardian, who creates their own account and links it to their dancer. The parent can then follow their dancer's progress and use the app's game features.
The studio decides which dancers and families to add. We process the studio's records to provide the service to the studio and its families.
3. Information we collect
Adult accounts (studio owners, instructors and parents)
- Name and email address
- Password (stored only in encrypted, hashed form by our authentication provider)
- Your role and which studio or studios you belong to
- For parents, which dancers your account is linked to
- A record of which version of our Terms and this policy you accepted, and when
Dancer records entered by the studio
- The dancer's name
- The classes they are enrolled in
- Attendance
- Skill star ratings, written notes and progress reports from instructors and studio staff
We do not ask studios for a dancer's date of birth, address, phone number, email, school, photos, or medical information, and studios agree not to enter that kind of information.
Activity in the family app
The family app saves the choices made in its game features: the avatar's look and outfits, the companion characters and dance moves chosen, and the rewards, coins and achievements earned from the dancer's progress. These are saved to the dancer's profile within the parent's account so they are there next time.
Device information
- If you turn on notifications, a push notification token and your device platform (iOS or Android), linked to your account, so we can send progress notifications.
- The app stores your sign-in session and some data on your device so it works offline.
- Like any web service, our hosting providers receive standard technical information such as IP address and browser type when you connect.
Roster imports
Studios can import a class roster by uploading a spreadsheet, document or image. For documents, images and some spreadsheets, we send the file to our AI provider, Anthropic, to read the dancer and class information out of it. The studio reviews the results before anything is saved. We do not store the uploaded file. Anthropic does not use this data to train its models.
Website inquiries
If you contact us through our website, we collect your name, email address, studio name and message.
Marketing photos and quotes
Separately from the app, we may use photos, video or quotes in our marketing, but only with a signed release. For anyone under 18, a parent or guardian signs it. A release can be withdrawn at any time by emailing privacy@skillbarre.com.
4. How we use information
- To provide the service: show progress to the right instructors and families, send progress reports and notifications, and run the app's game features.
- To manage accounts, keep the service secure, and provide support.
- To respond to inquiries and communicate with studios about their subscription.
- To improve SkillBarre and fix problems.
We do not sell personal information. We do not use it for advertising. We do not use it to train AI models.
5. Who can see information
- The dancer's studio. The studio's owner and instructors see the records for dancers at their studio. An instructor who teaches at several studios sees each studio's records only within that studio.
- Linked parents. A parent sees only the dancers linked to their account.
- Service providers that run parts of SkillBarre for us, under contracts that limit their use of the data:
- Supabase: database, file storage and sign-in
- Vercel: hosting for our website and studio web app
- Anthropic: reading uploaded rosters, class lists and curriculum documents
- Google Firebase: delivering push notifications
- Resend: delivering emails, including progress reports
- Google Fonts and jsDelivr: delivering fonts and code for our website
- Legal requirements. We may disclose information if the law requires it, to protect the safety of a person, or as part of a sale or merger of our business. Any buyer must follow this policy.
Nothing a dancer does in SkillBarre is shown publicly, and dancers cannot post or message anyone.
6. Children's privacy
SkillBarre is built for dance studios and parents. Accounts are for adults only, and the app is designed to be used by a parent or guardian. Children do not sign up or log in, and we do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13.
- Information about dancers. The dancer's name and progress records come from the studio (section 3). We ask studios not to enter anything more, and the app never asks a child for information.
- How it is used and shared. Only as described in sections 4 and 5. Information about dancers is never sold, used for ads, or made public.
- Parent rights. A parent can review their child's information or ask us to delete it at any time. Email privacy@skillbarre.com. We will confirm you are the child's parent before acting. The studio's progress records also follow the studio's own process.
- If a child contacts us. If we learn that a child under 13 has given us personal information directly, we will delete it.
7. How long we keep information
We keep information only as long as needed for the purposes above, then delete it.
| Information | How long we keep it |
|---|---|
| Dancer records and app activity | While the dancer's studio uses SkillBarre. Deleted within 90 days after the studio's subscription ends. Deleted within 30 days if a parent asks us to delete them. |
| Adult accounts | Until you close your account, or until 90 days after the last studio your account is linked to stops using SkillBarre (we email you first). Deleted within 30 days of a closure request. |
| Uploaded roster files | Not stored. Used only to read the roster, then discarded. |
| Push notification tokens | Until you sign out, turn off notifications, or close your account. |
| Records of terms acceptance | For as long as the account exists, and 3 years after, so we can show the terms were accepted. |
| Website inquiries | 2 years. |
| Server logs and backups | Removed automatically on our providers' short rotation schedules, generally within 30 days. |
8. Your choices
- Anyone with an account can ask to see, correct or delete their information by emailing privacy@skillbarre.com. We respond within 30 days.
- You can turn notifications on or off in your device settings.
- Studio records can also be corrected through your studio.
9. Security
Information is encrypted in transit and at rest by our hosting provider. Each studio's records are separated so that only that studio's staff and linked families can reach them. Passwords are never stored in readable form. No system is perfectly secure, but if a breach affects your information, we will notify you as the law requires.
10. Changes to this policy
If we make a material change, we will post the new version here and notify account holders by email or in the app before it takes effect. If a change affects how we handle information about dancers, we will tell parents before it takes effect.
